Indian tribes in Canada and the U.S. made numerous uses of Calamus root; one being that they ate the root as a general tonic and when undertaking long hunts. An advantage to obtaining the whole root of this plant is that when aromatic herbs are powdered, the volatile oils they contain will more readily evaporate.
Native American Indians would simply eat roots in 1-inch sections as a general tonic, in 2-inch sections to help them continue their hunts. Calamus has a certain sweetness as well as a sour quality and a heat like ginger or cinnamon. Again, these are WHOLE pieces of organic Acorus calamus var. Americanus root that average 2-3 inches long. This is not powder.
