SAGE: Using a smudging tool is part of many Native American traditions. The burning of herbs for emotional, psychic, and spiritual purification is also common practice among many religious, healing, and spiritual groups.
The ritual of smudging can be defined as "spiritual house cleaning." In theory, the smoke attaches itself to negative energy and as the smoke clears it takes the negative energy with it, releasing it into another space where it will be regenerated into positive energy.

Imphepho (Helichrysum odoratissimum) is a strongly aromatic, multi-branched perennial herb with small silvery leaves and yellow flowers. Imphepho has had many historical uses, all of them of great interest. Indigenous peoples believe that ancestors make contact with them through their dreams. They employ imphepho’s aromatic incense in dream ceremonies that are crucial to their culture.

Most often, Imphepho is simply burned as ritual incense to invoke the goodwill of ancestors. So we thought it would be nice to have some Imphepho smudging wands. These hand tied wonders come to us directly from a small family farm in South Africa. Each weighs in at about a half ounce, and we sell two in a pack by quantity not weight. Just light the tip and blow it out when it smolders. Imphepho may also be combined with other ritualistic herbs.

This product is not intended or sold for ingestion by humans or animals. It is sold only for use as an incense or for smoking. WARNING: Smoking anything, including herbal products of any kind, are harmful to the body. Do not leave burning incense unattended.

We love this set of three mini smudges because each one evokes a unique region of the American West, where Juniper Ridge sustainably gathers sage products. White Sage represents the the bouldery Desert Southwest, while Mugwort brings us to the mountain meadows of the Sierras and Cascades, and Siskiyou Cedar rounds out the trio from the remote, coastal wildlands of the Pacific Northwest. Thus this trio conjures a little desert, a bit of mountain meadow, and a dash of northern forest. Open yourself up to the quietness and beauty all around you.

Juniper Ridge Sage, Mugwort, & Cedar minis come in a 3-pack of 4" Smudge Sticks.

This sacred herbal mixture was used ritualistically by Native Americans because it is believed to have the power to absorb prayers and send them to the Great Spirit.  This blend was also mixed with tobacco and smoked in a sacred pipe, and this is the actual blend when mixed with tobacco became known as Kinnikinnick, from the Algonquian word for "mixture".

There is no tobacco in this blend, and does not have to be smoked as it is used traditionally, but can instead be used as a ceremonial incense or for smudging.  There are several accepted spellings for this product; one is "Kinick Kinick" and the other is "Knick Knick", and both both refer to the same ceremonial incense.  Also, the original word for this sacred herbal blend originally known as "Kinnickinnick" has been improperly interchanged with the Bayberry Bush that was also used and also held in high esteem by Native Americans.  The Bearberry Bush (also known for its mild stmulant properties) is indeed an ingredient in this sacred blend, but it certainly isn't the only, and only becomes "Kinnickinnick" when tobacco is added to the mix as well.

This is one of the products we are extremely proud to offer.  It's a product of our Peruvian Cooperative, and it's also one of the best incenses we have found for those who love the heavily-used ritualistic incense known as Palo Santo wood.  Typically, Palo Santo comes as sticks or chips, but our Peruvian Cooperative uses ancient recipes to turn the Palo Santo wood to dust, then blending it with natural resins and a second ritualistic herb such as sage.

As a result, these sticks burn just like regular incense, they burn evenly, and they burn for many hours.  They may seem slightly "pricey" but pure Palo Santo wood, like Sandalwood is getting more difficult and more expensive.  Our Palo Santo comes from a forest of trees that are not only sustainably harvested, but they have been set aside specifically for making into this special incense. Choose your favorite variety below.
